How to Explain Your Work in a Behavioral Interview

An interviewer wants to understand what you did and what happened. Use this Land Next Role guide to tell a clear story about work you can explain.

A useful interview answer shows what you did and why it mattered. Explain your part in the work, the choices you made and what happened. Include a number only when you can explain where it came from.

Use STAR to Keep Your Story Clear

Use STAR to keep your answer easy to follow. Give enough context for the interviewer to understand the problem, then spend more time on your own decisions and actions.

Explain What Happened

Finish with what happened. That could be a change you measured, feedback you received or something you learned when the work did not go as planned.

If you do not have a reliable number, say what you observed and what you cannot confirm. A clear, honest account is more useful than an impressive result you cannot support.
